Legendary Tales of Zhong Kui

From mortal scholar to divine protector - discover the complete saga of the demon-queller who became China's most beloved guardian deity

Legendary Tale
Zhong Kui's legends took shape in the Song–Yuan era and crystallized in Ming–Qing theater. A popular arc centers on gratitude and promise-keeping: wronged at the examinations and dead by indignation, Zhong Kui is appointed in the netherworld as General Who Quells Demons. On New Year's Eve he escorts his sister's wedding ("Zhong Kui Marries Off His Sister") and gifts a demon-slaying sword as a sign of household protection—using ghosts to mirror human virtues and vices.
